LUMBERTON, N.C. — A firefighter with the Allenton Volunteer Fire Department was struck by a vehicle and severely injured Thursday at the scene of a brush fire, WMBF reported.

Robeson County Fire Marshal Stephanie Chavis said that heavy smoke reduced visibility in the area. The firefighter was on the side of the road at the time and was airlifted to a hospital.

Chavis said the firefighter sustained leg fractures, and had abdominal bleeding and possible head trauma.
