AUSTIN, Texas — Texas volunteer firefighters may now be eligible for tuition exemption for fire service-related programs at many public universities.
Fire Flow reported that the program for tuition exemption was enacted in 2009 for full-time career firefighters. The bill was recently amended to include volunteer firefighters.
The program, which will be spearheaded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, will allow firefighters to take college courses in order to advance in their careers.
The program is part of the state’s initiative, called 60x30, to have 60 percent of the state’s young adults with a college-level education by 2030.
