The Kansas City Star
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Bagpipers escorted a somber Kansas City Fire Department honor guard through the aisles of the Sprint Center as a memorial service began Saturday afternoon for two fallen firefighters.
“In the midst of tears… we lift up to a loving and compassionate God two of our finest sons,” announced the Rev. Mike Lewis, deacon at St. Patrick Catholic Parish, which will hold one of the men’s private funeral services Monday. After that introit, bagpipers slowly played Amazing Grace in an otherwise silent auditorium packed with mourners.
Elected officials and ordinary citizens joined with the KCFD and firefighters from across the country to pay tribute to Larry Leggio and John Mesh, longtime firefighters who answered their last call Monday night.
