ALVIN, Texas — Captain Charles D. Krampota, 60, was found dead at home from an apparent heart attack Friday about three hours after being cleared from the scene of a mobile home fire, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Krampota spent 30 years in the fire service, more than 20 of which were with the Alvin Volunteer Fire Department. He also worked for the Alvin school district for more than 30 years.

"Charlie was an outstanding firefighter and friend to so many. One of the most dependable and hardworking individuals I have ever met. He will be sorely missed," Rex Klesel, AVFD chief said in a statement.

An investigation into the line-of-duty death is ongoing.
