CAIRO — An Egyptian police official says a bus ferrying laborers crashed into a truck east of Cairo, leaving 15 workers dead and 15 others injured.

The police official says the accident occurred early Monday near the industrial city of 10th of Ramadan, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) east of the Egyptian capital. The bus had 30 workers on board.

The injured were taken to nearby hospital for treatment.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the press. He didn’t say what happened to the drivers.

Egypt has a history of serious bus and car crashes because of speeding, careless driving and poor road conditions. At least 8,000 people were killed in accidents in 2006, the most recent statistics available.
