APPLETON, Wis. — Registration is now open for the 13th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field, organizers announced last week. The Sept. 20 event is co-sponsored by Pierce Manufacturing and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department.

Open to firefighters, families and community members, the climb replicates the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Each participant carries an honor badge bearing the name and photo of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters killed on Sept. 11, 2001, and rings a fire bell upon reaching the symbolic 78th floor, the highest level firefighters reached that day.

“The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unity which defines the fire service,” Green Bay Metro Fire Department Chief Matthew Knott said. “Each year, we are humbled by the incredible support from our community and are proud to honor the 343 firefighters who gave everything on that tragic day.”

Last year, nearly 2,300 climbers helped raise funds for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Organizers hope to exceed 2,500 participants this year, with all proceeds again benefiting the foundation’s survivor-support programs.

Registration fees are $35 through July 11, $40 from July 12 to Aug. 22 and $45 thereafter. Participants who register by Aug. 22 receive an event T-shirt; all climbers receive an honor badge. Check-in will be held Sept. 19 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. near Lambeau’s Kwik Trip Gate. The opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on climb day, followed by staggered start times and live music outside the stadium.

“It’s both an honor and a privilege for Pierce to be a small part of the fire service, and we’re incredibly proud to continue growing this event in support of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation,” Pierce President Bob Schulz said.
