ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A firefighter in New York was injured after falling from a ladder while trying to access the second story of a burning house.

The Rochester Fire Department firefighter, whose name was not reported, was battling the fire Sunday night when he climbed up to search the second floor, according to WHAM.

“There was so much smoke and he was trying to make entrance into the second story of the house and something happened, it was hard to see,” Rochester Fire Deputy Chief David Kaltenbach said. “He just appeared out of the smoke and fell to the ground.”

Kaltenbach said the firefighter did not lose consciousness, and that it was lucky the ground was not frozen, which could have caused more severe injuries.

One person was inside the residence at the time of the fire but managed to get out safely. The blaze was brought under control after 45 minutes.
