SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas — Texas firefighters and paramedics are signing a pair of Texas flags to honor El Paso first responders after the mass shooting earlier this month that killed 22 people.

Michael Gomez, a former paramedic and El Paso native, will travel with the flags around the state of Texas, collecting signatures to honor first responders, Fox San Antonio reported. One flag will be signed solely by first responders, while first responder supporters will sign the second flag.

Wilson County District 2 Fire Station firefighters and paramedics were the first to sign the flag, some of whom were involved in the 2017 Sutherland Springs church massacre.

In an interview, Gomez said it’s important for first responders to come together after a tragedy as part of the healing process.

Gomez will travel with the flag on his motorcycle to San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, the Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, Houston, Lubbock and Odessa. His last stop will be the El Paso Fire Department.
