Ill. FF/paramedic to referee hockey at 2026 Winter Olympics

Lake Forest’s Sam Hiller will take the ice in Milan during the Winter Olympics, bringing the split-second decision-making and composure of a first responder to Olympic hockey officiating

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Lake Forest Fire Fighter/Paramedic Sam Hiller has been selected to officiate as a hockey referee at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy.

The City of Lake Forest posted on social media that Hiller, who serves the community as a firefighter/paramedic, will take the ice in February to referee games featuring the world’s top hockey talent as teams compete for Olympic gold.

The department said the selection reflects the same quick decision-making, composure and professionalism required both on emergency calls and in high-level international competition.

“From controlling the flames to controlling the game, Sam embodies dedication, quick thinking, and composure under pressure that define both professions. Whether it’s a five-alarm fire or a five-on-three power play, she stays cool when things heat up,” the City of Lake Forest said.
