HOUSTON — Sunday marked National First Responders Day, and actor Matthew McConaughey made it a memorable one, surprising groups of first responders in Houston to mark the occasion.
McConaughey, teaming up with Wild Turkey, brought “turkey feasts” for police officers, firefighters, 911 dispatchers and Ben Taub emergency room doctors and nurses, commending their work in Hurricane Harvey, according to a news release.
“Basically today is about saying thank you to these people that were all on the front line and got out there to rescue people first,” McConaughey said in a video posted to Facebook outside Fire Station 26.
The Texas native entered the station to applause, wearing a button-down Wild Turkey shirt and backwards baseball cap. The Houston Fire Department, Fire Chief Samuel Pena, Houston Police Department and Chief Art Acevedo tweeted their thanks for his visit.
So did Mayor Sylvester Turner, who wrote he was “honored to welcome him to our city.”
