WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — Willoughby firefighters received their second Compassionate Fire Department Award — and a box of vegan chocolates — from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for pulling two cats and two newborn kittens out of a burning apartment July 10 on Euclid Avenue. The first award was for pulling a dog from a burning apartment in 2010.
“The firefighters of the Willoughby Fire Department are truly heroes because they don’t consider their job done until all residents — humans, cats, and dogs alike — are no longer in harm’s way,” PETA Vice President Tracy Reiman said.
Willoughby Fire Chief Al Zwegat said the fire last week started in the kitchen. Firefighters were able to extinguish it quickly and spoke with the occupants, who said they had a male and female cat, and that the female cat was pregnant. A fire lieutenant began searching for the cats and found the male hiding in the bathtub and the female under a chair.
