GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to the scene of a man in a trench box Tuesday morning. Officers’ preliminary investigation indicates a Ride-On bus struck a construction barrel, which then hit a construction foreman at the job site. He was knocked into a 16-foot trench.

Firefighters responded to Midcounty Highway and Washington Grove Lane at 8:52 a.m. Tuesday for a “below-grade” rescue of a man reportedly in a metal trench.

“We got a ladder truck to come in and we used basically a basket and a hauling system, a rope system, to remove him from the trench area,” said Captain Oscar Garcia with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

It took two dozen firefighters nearly an hour to get him out. The worker is with Gabes Services Inc. and he was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery County Police and OSHA are still investigating if the Ride-On bus driver was in the wrong. So far, no charges have been filed.
