COLUMBUS, Ohio — A proposal by state Republicans would provide $1,000 in bonus pay to first responders, including firefighters, EMS providers and law enforcement.

The Ohio Capital Journal reported that the bonus payments would be paid for through funding made available in the American Rescue Plan and would cost about $83 million.

“The last year and a half have been some really difficult times for our country, and in particular, first responders and law enforcement, they have been put in some very, very difficult situations,” Rep. Craig Reidel said at a press conference. “What we’re doing here in Ohio is saying, ‘we have your back.’”
