CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A West Virginia firefighter accidentally shot himself while on duty on Tuesday.

Charleston Fire Department officials say the firefighter was attempting to secure his personal firearm in his locker at Fire Station #7 when the gun was discharged accidentally, striking him in the leg, WOWK reported.

Authorities said no other firefighters were involved in the incident and that those who witnessed it immediately began rendering care. The firefighter, identified by officials as Firefighter Isaac Brunetti, was transported to the hospital for treatment and later released.

The incident is under investigation by the Charleston Police Department. An internal investigation at the fire department is also underway.
