LITCHFIELD, Minn. — Citizens rescued a man from a burning vehicle after he had suffered a medical condition believed to have caused the one-vehicle accident in Meeker County on Wednesday afternoon.

Nicholas Arens, 38, of rural Kimball, was subsequently airlifted from the accident scene by Life Link helicopter to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

Meeker County Sheriff Brian Cruze reported in a news release that the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle accident near County Road 19 and 330th Street in Kingston Township at 2:41 p.m. Wednesday. A caller reported that the vehicle was on fire and there was a male driver still in the vehicle.

Deputies with the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office along with a member of the Sheriff’s Office Community Service Officer/Paramedic program arrived and learned that citizens at the scene were able to get the male driver out of the vehicle before the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

Kimball Fire and Rescue arrived and extinguished the vehicle fire.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Arens. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle. The initial investigation revealed Arens suffered a medical condition which caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and crash.
