HOMER, N.Y. — Ron Beever has always lived within a few miles of the Homer Fire Department.
So about a year and a half after graduating from high school, he decided to help out. In 1964, he took a state course that taught him the ins and outs of being a volunteer firefighter. He’s been a member of the Homer Fire Department ever since.
“When you stop and think about the period of 50 years and how much time this man has given to the community for no pay at all, it’s overwhelming,” said Homer fire chief Randy King. “He’s always been there for us.” Beever, 71, was honored for his years of service Dec. 6 with a surprise ceremony during the department’s annual end-of-the-year dinner. He was presented with several proclamations and a plaque, which he proudly displays in his house.
