COOS BAY, Ore. — After 25 years of service, volunteer firefighter Tina Eck is hanging up her helmet at the Coos Bay Fire Department.
A longtime volunteer since October 1989, Eck was the second longest serving volunteer in the department and will be sorely missed, Chief Mark Anderson said. “She has been around for 25 years, and we don’t get volunteers who are just that dedicated,” Anderson said. “That leadership and experience is going to be missed, but we’re really going to miss her presence and her straight-forwardness.”
While Eck worked at Huggins Insurance across from Station No. 1, she, along with the other volunteer firefighters, was asked and trained to fulfill the duties of full-time staffers. “They are trained at the same level, so whatever the need might be, say putting up lighting or fire suppression, her job description was just as the career staff,” Anderson said. “It’s been really nice to have her because she’s just been so reliable.”
