Chicago teen’s devotion to volunteering leads to unprecedented run

CHICAGO — Keith Thornton caught the bug at age 3, watching wide-eyed as a team of sooty-faced firefighters rescued his neighbors from a flaming building.

Now an 18-year-old high school senior, Thornton has transformed his boyhood passion into an unprecedented apprenticeship at a Northwest Side firehouse.
