Pa. firefighter charged with arson, jailed

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. — A Somerset County firefighter has been charged with arson after a fire Tuesday.

Charles Whipkey, 34, of Confluence was jailed in lieu of $20,000 bond after state police investigators determined that a fire at 540 Hughart St. in Confluence was intentionally set. Police said Whipkey started the blaze, which caused an estimated $60,000 in damage.

Whipkey is a member of the Confluence Volunteer Fire Department. He was arraigned before District Judge Joseph Cannoni of Windber and faces a preliminary hearing at a later date.
