NEW LONDON, Conn. — There is a dire need for volunteer firefighters in Eastern Connecticut.
An increased number of volunteers quickens the emergency response and in most towns, the fire trucks are bought and paid for by the town but those who man them are volunteers. That is because most volunteers work during the day. Fire departments need more people who can leave their jobs and their homes at a moments notice.
“It can be a little nerve racking because I figure you’re looking at the call and you’re figuring it’s a priority and you really need to get out there and we’re sitting here waiting for more people to show up,” said Lt. Dana Peloso, Plainfield Fire Department.
