LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas fire officials said they believe careless smoking may have been the cause of a massive apartment fire Monday morning in the east valley that left at least 40 people homeless.

The fire was reported about 10:30 a.m. at the Cornerstone Crossing apartments at 6666 Washington Ave., near Buffalo Drive, according to department spokesman Tim Szymanski.

The blaze began on an outside patio and spread to the building before firefighters arrived, Szymanski said. The flames engulfed the 16-unit building, causing extensive damage.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue utilized 12 engines, three ladder trucks, six rescues, five battalion chiefs, 15 support vehicles and more than 100 personnel to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported, but Szymanski said two people were taken to a hospital with chest pains that weren’t believed to be serious.

Damages were estimated at $1 million, according to officials.

The American Red Cross is setting up a shelter at the Mirabelli Community Center near Jones Boulevard and U.S. 95 to house those displaced.
