SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose police arrested a suspected drunken driver after the man rammed his car into a fire engine at a house fire early Sunday.

The driver, who is in his early 20s, swerved at an excessive speed around a fire captain directing traffic and two parked cars before plowing into a small engine usually used for fighting brush fire. The collision pushed the fire vehicle forward 15 to 20 feet, said San Jose Fire Capt. Anthony Melendrez.

None of the 23 firefighters at the home near Mabury Road and High Glen Drive nor the driver were injured. Both the fire engine and the car were damaged.

The one-alarm fire in a wall in an upstairs bedroom of the home was reported just before midnight Saturday. No one was in the house at the time, and the cause of the fire, which caused less than $10,000 in damage, is under investigation.
