Mo. pickup driver killed after slamming into fire truck

Chad E. Zaiz, 30, was swerving to avoid police car; police car, fire truck were on interstate for medical emergency

ST. PETERS, Mo. — A pickup truck driver died when his vehicle crashed into the back of a fire truck in St. Peters, Mo., on Thursday.

Chad E. Zaiz, 30, was swerving to avoid a police car, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Both the police car and the fire truck were on the interstate for a medical emergency and were waiting for an ambulance to leave the scene at the time of the collision.

The police car was parked in the same lane some distance behind the fire truck. Zaiz swerved to miss the police car and then made a hard turn back into that lane, hitting the fire truck, whose emergency lights were on.

Zaiz died at the scene.
