HOUSTON, Texas — Three Houston firefighters suffered first- and second-degree burns early this morning when a home fire flared up while they were inside the structure at 5107 Lyndhurst in southeast Houston.
The men were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital-The Medical Center and were expected to recover, Assistant District Chief Tommy Dowdy said.
The three injured were among the first on the scene, he said.
“They were inside the house putting the fire out,” Dowdy said. “It appears that the fire flashed on them. As fires progress, at a certain point the fire will get hot enough that everything in the house will just light off and we think that’s what happened.”
Other firefighters helped the three get out of the house, while calling for more backup to fight the fire, Dowdy said.
The three suffered blisters and other burns.
“They should be all right,” Dowdy said.
Names of the injured were withheld until their families are notified.
The fire, the cause of which remains under investigation, was called in at 5:08 a.m. and extinguished shortly before 6 a.m., Dowdy said. The home was empty at the time of the blaze.
