SALINA, Kan. — The Salina Fire Department opened its new Station 4 at East Crawford Street and Markley Road.

Aug. 10 marked the first shift for firefighters operating out of the new facility. Fire Chief Shane Pearson told KSAL the department had outgrown the previous station and needed more space to better serve the community.

The new Station 4 is about 20,000 square feet, roughly three times the size of the station it replaces, which was built in the 1960s. The facility expands apparatus space from three small bays to five larger bays for fire trucks and ambulances, and will be staffed by five or six personnel, depending on the shift.

Older stations, including Stations 1 and 2, have been renovated because their locations limit expansion or relocation.

The new Station 4 was designed to accommodate the department’s current needs and future growth.
