EDMONTON, Alberta — An early-morning fire that started at a south-side construction site spread quickly Saturday morning before destroying 18 townhouses, damaging 76 more and leaving hundreds of Edmontonians homeless this weekend.

The fire started around 5:15 a.m. at a three-building, four-storey, 149-unit apartment under construction. Strong winds and tinder-dry conditions carried the flames to nearby townhouses within minutes. Nine duplexes were destroyed and another 76 townhouses and homes were damaged. No injuries were reported.

“There was a wall of fire,” said Teresa Hardy, 25, whose home was destroyed. She woke to sounds of shouting from the street, looked out her window and ran from the house.
