PHOENIX — About 20 Phoenix firefighters sought grief counseling Monday evening in the lobby of the Mayo Clinic Hospital as they waited to escort the body a fallen comrade to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office.
Mark Carter, a 16-year Phoenix Fire Department veteran, died Monday afternoon while on duty. Fire officials believe a medical condition lead to his death.
Carter, who was in his late 40s, grabbed lunch with his crew of three other fire fighters around noon before collapsing in the restaurant where his co-workers were unable to revive him, said department spokesman Mike Sandulak. Carter was pronounced dead at the hospital about 1 p.m.
