Baby left at San Jose, Calif., fire station

A newborn baby dropped off at a San Jose fire station early this morning appears to be healthy, police said.

Somebody wrapped the hours-old newborn in adult clothing, then called 911 to report that a baby had been left at the fire station at 17th and Santa Clara streets at about 2:50 a.m., Sgt. Nick Muyo said.

“The baby wasn’t exposed to the elements any great length of time,” Muyo said.

The baby was taken to a local hospital. Police have not released information on the baby’s gender or ethnicity.

Under California law, a parent can legally surrender a baby within three days of birth at any hospital or fire station.

Officials would prefer to see babies handed to paramedics or firefighters rather than dropped off, Muyo said. Still, he said, “It’s a case where the law worked.”

A parent has 14 days from the date of surrender to reclaim the baby.
