Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department Chief Pete Peterson says his leave of absence is due to lack of confidence in equipment he must ask firefighters to use.
He said the main problem is a malfunctioning pumper truck that doesn’t properly function.
“I cannot authorize my people to go into an interior fire and attack because of lack of equipment, " he said Tuesday night. “It’s just too dangerous and I cannot continue to put these peoples’ lives in jeopardy.”
Acting Chief John Herrin says both of the department’s fire engines are basically out of service.
