HESPERIA, Calif. — Cool weather and calm winds Monday helped firefighters surround a brush fire that prompted the evacuation of 230 homes during the weekend.
The 6.4-square-mile blaze was fully contained in the afternoon, said San Bernardino County fire spokeswoman Tracey Martinez.
It began as a small brush fire Saturday morning. Flames got to within feet of some houses in Hesperia, a city of 82,000 nestled in hills and canyons about 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
Only one home was damaged and an outbuilding was destroyed. No injuries were reported.
Most of the evacuees were allowed to return Saturday night, the rest early Sunday. The fire’s cause was being investigated.
