CHARLESTON, S.C. — A Charleston commission is considering a number of ideas to honor nine firefighters killed in a furniture store fire last year.
The 26-member commission held its first meeting Wednesday.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the panel is considering a state-of-the-art training center surrounded by a park, monuments and an eternal flame.

The city bought the Sofa Super Store site for nearly $2 million.
One commission member said the memorial could cost up to $10 million.
The newspaper reported there was no public notice of the meeting, a violation of the state’s Freedom of Information law. Mayor Joe Riley said the failure to provide 24-hour notice of the meeting was an oversight.
Riley says the planning for the memorial will be a “community, collaborative decision.”
