CHICAGO — On Dec. 6, 2004, Capt. Lynda Turner was the first officer to arrive on the scene of the LaSalle Bank building fire. She and her Tower Ladder One crew managed to escape unharmed, even though 30,000 square feet of fire was hidden in the ceiling.
On Monday, Turner recorded another first. She’s the first female battalion chief in a Chicago Fire Department long known as a male bastion.
Turner is one of 36 captains expected to be promoted to battalion chief over the next 30 days in rank order of their performance on an April 30 battalion chief’s exam that was Chicago’s first since October 1998.
