JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — At first glance, passersby might get the impression that Fire Station 18 on Blanding Boulevard was the victim of a graffiti attack.
But second and third glances reveal the station’s three newly painted bay doors boast striking, colorful designs - in red, orange and white.
The firefighters and EMTs who are based at Station 18 are thrilled with the art, done by fellow firefighter Mike Syrakis of the Peoria Road station. Their comments ranged from “great” to “amazing.”
“He designed it for us,” said Lori Fehr, captain at Station 18. “The guys out here are very proud of this station.”
The backgrounds are bold red. Each door has bright orange flames painted at the bottom, lapping skyward.
The north door has a painting of a large hatchet, the kind firefighters use to break down doors to save people in burning buildings, and “R-18,” signifying Rescue 18. The center door has a design shaped similarly to the Clay Fire and Rescue Division seal, with the number 18 in the center. The south door has a painting of another hatchet, with “E-18,” signifying Engine 18.
Crews at Station 18 are happy to note that other firefighters and EMTs in Clay County have taken notice of the art work, as have emergency personnel from Jacksonville, who pass the station on their way to and from Orange Park Medical Center.
“They’re jealous,” said Fehr.
Most of the comments from the community have been positive, she said. The design was approved by Clay Fire and Rescue administrators.
