MASHANTUCKET, Conn. — A roof fire at a gambling resort’s hotel was caused by a malfunctioning device meant to keep pipes from freezing, a spokesman said Wednesday.
Guests at the Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods Resort Casino were put up in other hotels but were allowed back Wednesday to retrieve belongings, resort spokesman Saverio Mancini said.
The fire at Foxwoods, owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, forced hundreds of guests to evacuate, but there were no injuries.
The fire was the second at a U.S. hotel-casino within a week. A blaze Friday at the Monte Carlo casino-hotel on the Las Vegas Strip damaged mostly the exterior of the top five floors of the 32-story hotel, officials there say.
