Early morning house fire in La. leaves 3 dead

The Associated Press

THIBODAUX, La. — A fire swept through a home early Friday, killing a woman and her two small grandchildren and injuring the children’s mother.

Police spokeswoman Laura Guise identified the dead as Mary Jane Thomas, 54; Shakoya Triggs, 4; and Emanuel Triggs Jr., 3.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the cause of the fire in this town about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans. Guise said foul play was not suspected. Electricity to the three-bedroom wood house had been cut off last week.

The children’s mother, Iesha Holly, 23, was hospitalized with burns on her legs and torso, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Guise said.

The rest of the household — three adults and a 1-year-old — escaped unhurt, she said. The building was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived about 1:40 a.m., she said.
