Ex-treasurer of Va. fire department charged

He is accused of using a department credit card to run up $60,000 in unauthorized cash advances and purchases

NORFOLK, Va. — A former treasurer with the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department in Sussex County has been charged with misappropriating $60,000 in department funds.

Arthur B. Barnes Jr., 34, of Wakefield faces a federal wire fraud charge following an investigation by the U.S. Secret Service.

He is accused of using a department credit card to run up $60,000 in unauthorized cash advances and purchases for his own benefit, according to papers filed in U.S. District Court.

Barnes, who remains free, does not yet have a court date.
