The once predominately male world of firefighting is making room for females. Approximately 6,000 women are professional firefighters nationwide.
A handful of women nationwide have functioned successfully as career firefighters and officers for more than 25 years. Times are changing rapidly now.
The Black Mountain Fire Department has two full-time female firefighters, and three female volunteers. The Swannanoa Fire Department has one part-time female firefighter who has just been named Volunteer Firefighter of the Year, and two volunteers.
