STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — A car containing ammunition caught fire on the Mass Pike late Saturday morning, setting off a series of small explosions and closing the interstate in both directions for about 20 minutes.

State Police from the Lee and Westfield barracks responded to mile marker 5.4 in Stockbridge at 11 a.m. after Robert Bainbridge called to report that his car, which contained 20 rounds of bird shot, had caught fire and that the ammunition had begun to go off.

The Stockbridge Fire Department responded and controlled the blaze.

A State Police bomb squad was also called, but was canceled after all the shells exploded and it was determined they no longer posed a threat.

No one was injured and the road has been reopened in both directions.

The car fire remains under investigation.

No other information was immediately available.
