NORFOLK, Va. — A city firefighter has been charged with four costly arsons that occurred two hours apart in Salisbury, Md., on Tuesday night, and investigators are considering whether he set other fires on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia.

David Clifton Parks, 30, of Onancock, was pulled over by Salisbury police in a Lincoln Continental that had been moving erratically, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. Police saw him stuff something under his front seat and found matches there, and also found a one-gallon container with gasoline in it, the fire marshal’s office said.

Parks was charged with setting fires to a cafe, an automobile, an antiques store and a duplex. Initial estimates put damages at $248,000. At the last fire, two occupants on the second floor discovered the blaze and fought it with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.
