GROTON, Conn. — A man who fatally shot himself after a standoff with police at the University of Connecticut Avery Point campus Tuesday has been identified as a firefighter.
Timothy Devine, 30, had been with the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department for four years. Chief Todd M. Paige said Firefighter Devine was a “dedicated firefighter with an exemplary record who took great pride in serving the community.”
Firefighter Devine was found by police close to the UConn campus armed and seemingly depressed. After evacuating parts of the campus, police negotiators tried to get him to surrender his weapons, but he was unresponsive.
Several hours later, Firefighter Devine shot himself. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
State police have taken over the investigation.
