Fort Worth fire chief died of heart disease

Fort Worth Fire Chief Charles Gaines died of hypertensive heart disease, the Tarrant County medical examiner ruled Monday.

Chief Gaines, 49, was found dead Saturday at his home. Paramedics were called after a friend failed to reach him by phone. Firefighters forced their way inside the house and found his body in bed. Chief Gaines, who joined the department in 2002, was the city’s first black fire chief.

Public services have been planned in Fort Worth and his hometown, Oklahoma City.

The first public viewing will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fort Worth Fire and Police Training Center, 1000 Calvert St.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Great Commission Baptist Church, 7700 McCart Ave. in Fort Worth. A second public viewing will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, 5700 N. Kelly Ave. in Oklahoma City. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
