NORFOLK, Va. — A fire caused by an overheated window air conditioning unit killed four dogs and caused significant damage to a house in Ocean View on Monday afternoon.
A firefighter sustained a minor injury while fighting the blaze.
Firefighters responded to the fire in the 200 block of W. Government Ave. at 3 p.m.
The residents were not home at the time, but four dogs in the house were killed, Norfolk Fire-Rescue spokesman Capt. Garry Windley said.
Windley said the window unit’s three-prong plug had been modified to fit into a two-prong electrical outlet, causing the unit to overheat and start the fire.
The fire caused about $50,000 in damage to the home, he said.
