Laurel resident Mya Thaxton works as a full-time firefighter in Baltimore City where she takes paramedic classes on two of her off days, volunteers one night a week at the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) and attends the University of Maryland, College Park, part-time.
While doing all of this, the 24-year-old also heads the membership committee at Laurel VFD and brought in the most applicants and new members in one year in the station’s 104-year history, said Jim Collins, president of the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association.
“She was in charge of the membership committee for years and as a result she had the highest number of members and applicants join in the history of the fire department and that’s 104 years old,” Collins said. “You normally average anywhere from, if you’re lucky, 10 new applicants a year and I think she was in the neighborhood of 30 for one year.” ...
