Fumes send 10 Chicago firefighters to hospital

CHICAGO — Four firefighters remained hospitalized this morning after inhaling toxic fumes while fighting a fire in a Roscoe Village thrift store on Chicago’s Near Northwest Side.

The fire started around 10 p.m. at Village Discount Outlet, 2043 W. Roscoe St., officials said. Large quantities of glass cleaner were stored in the building’s basement and released a dense cloud of ammonia fumes into the air.

“It’s a basement fire, and there’s very little ventilation,” said Michael Callahan, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman. “Some of the firemen were overcome by ammonia as they were exiting the building … (and) were transported to various hospitals.”
