CHICAGO — Despite a rescue attempt by her father, a 1-year-old old girl died Sunday morning after being injured in a fire in her West Side home.

Kaylan Quintero was pronounced dead at 4:40 a.m. at Stroger Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.

She had suffered burns from a fire at her home Saturday night in the 2600 block of West 22th Place.

The girl was in her basement apartment home with her father and older brother when the fire started, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Her father had removed her from the 2?-story building before returning to the structure to rescue the older boy when firefighters responded to the 11 p.m. call, Chief Officer Joe Roccasalva said.

The girl was initially taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Neither the father nor the brother was injured.

Officials were still investigating the cause of the fire late Sunday. Officials said working smoke detectors were in the home.

Fire Department representatives were in the neighborhood Sunday handing out smoke detectors, a standard procedure in fire-related deaths.
