OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Two Osceola County firefighters are recovering today after being burned while cooking dinner on an outdoor grill at their station, officials said.

The men, whose names were not released, were grilling at Station 65 on Cypress Parkway in Poinciana at about 6 p.m., Deputy Chief Danny McAvoy said. They had to leave to respond to a call.

First, though, something “popped,” causing a burst of fire, he said.

The men were burned on the face, chest and arms. Paramedics treated them while they were waiting to be flown by medical helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Both were treated and released but won’t be back at work right away.

“They’re burned pretty good,” McAvoy said.

The Division of State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause. But McAvoy said the flare-up was not caused by a propane tank exploding.
