Ill. firefighters battle blaze on way to colleague’s wake

ATLANTA, Ill. - Two Chicago firefighters who drove 135 miles to the wake of a fellow firefighter they’d never met were delayed on their way to the service by -- as fate would have it -- a fire.

Chicago Fire Commander Edward Fitzgerald and Chicago Battalion Chief Michael Gubricky made the drive southwest to Atlanta on Monday to pay their respects to Atlanta volunteer firefighter Roger Armstrong, who died while fighting a fire last week.

Fitzgerald and Gubricky had just arrived in Atlanta for Armstrong’s wake when a call came in about a house fire.
