Fire investigators tried Sunday to determine what caused a Lawrence apartment fire that killed a man and left about 30 families homeless a week before Christmas.

Sir Winston Apartment Homes is accepting donations of food, clothing and household items for residents affected by Sunday’s fire. Donations can be dropped off at the apartment complex’s office, 9093 Bourbon St., Lawrence. For more information, call the office at (317) 898-1688.

Officials initially thought everyone had safely evacuated the building at Sir Winston Apartment Homes, near 46th Street and Post Road. The fire, which started just before 4 a.m., originated in a first-floor corner apartment in the 9100 block of Bayou Court, said Lawrence Deputy Chief of Police Jack Bailey.

Police, however, discovered a man dead in one of the apartments while searching through debris after the fire was out, Bailey said. The family of the victim has not yet been notified, he said, noting that the victim was not the person leasing the apartment.
