Minn. firefighters see stranded kids to school

ST. PAUL, Minn. — It wasn’t the sort of rescue most people probably envision firefighters undertaking, but the St. Paul Fire Department called it a “rescue” all the same.

Two young children missed their school bus Monday morning and started the two-mile walk alone, according to the department. It was 38 degrees when Engine Co. No. 10 was returning to the station from an emergency call at 9 a.m. and spotted the kids on Shepard Road.

“It was cold out; they were alone,” said Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard. “We’re just glad they found them rather than someone sinister.”

Capt. Art Baumeister decided his crew would give the youngsters a ride in the fire engine to Adams Spanish Immersion Magnet.

“I’m extremely proud of the conduct of my fire crews this morning,” said Chief Tim Butler.
