MONTREAL — A Montreal firefighter has been charged with arson after a blaze destroyed a Canadian Tire store.
The Montreal fire department has confirmed that 45-year-old Michel Brochu has worked for the service since 1989.
He appeared briefly in a Montreal courtroom yesterday, and will be back in court for a bail hearing on July 27th.
In the meantime, investigators have asked that he undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Brochu was not on duty when the fire broke out last May 24th.
He has been suspended without pay pending his legal proceedings.
The Canadian Tire outlet was open when the five-alarm fire began.
No customers or staff were hurt, although one firefighter was slightly injured.
